Media assignment Essay Example For Students
Media assignment Essay She mentions two words that give the reader quite a vivid impression of Pakistan. Beggar and Sweeper girls This gives a negative feeling of Pakistan as a very poor country. There now seem to be a lot of cultural differences between the countries, these being: fashion, religion, tradition, food and the general way of life. Both the film and the poem deal with the major issue of identity, the film uses humour to show the issues caused by mixed nationalities whilst the poem deals with this issue more seriously. The poem is also realistic, in the sense that it shows the identity issue is quite a serious issue in her life. This is mainly because it is not fictional like the film butit is an autobiography. The film and the poem are similar as they both express problems caused by their mixed nationality and tell the audience / reader of pressures around them because of their mixed race. The poem also describes Monizas personal thoughts and feelings towards her Pakistani and English culture. However, the film shows that the people who are having issues with their identity confronting their actual problems by standing up for themselves and knowing what they think is acceptable for themselves to do. An example of this is when each son refuses to have an arranged marriage as they do not think it is fair. Both Mediums challenge our innate prejudices, they do this because both media show the audience / readers that each individual person is having problems because of something related to their mixed culture and we are shown what affect it has both on them and their families. I think that the film East is East, deals with the issue of identity more successfully than the poem Presents from my aunts in Pakistan, because the film uses humour to get the message across. This works and the audience understand the problems easily and are more interested to watch on unlike the poem. I think it was not easy to follow because of the sentence structure and the choice of words used, I couldnt rise up out of its fire This was not clear to me, as I did not fully understand what a phoenix had to do with the phrase until it was explained to me but the use of adjectives in the poem made it easier to imagine various pictures of clothes and the vibrant, glorious colours that were described to us. Moniza Alvi used phrases that were more mature in a serious way to get the problem across to the readers whilst the film used humour to show this. The characters in the film were against their Moslem culture and disapproved of it unlike Moniza as the poem focussed on her confusion as to which nationality she actually was. The poem tells us that the writer was confused and embarrassed rather than unhappy with her Pakistani culture. East is East was much easier to understand than the poem, it was easier to follow and more interesting to follow, especially to teenagers as the humour is quite rude. An example of this is of the swearing used and the way it was used. It shows the viewers that their mixed nationality was a big problem for them, their lives and a problem to some of the people around them; therefore we are given a bigger impression of mixed identity and how it effects people on a bigger scale.
Law & Ethics The Government of Several Countries
Question: Discuss the rights and the extent of the benefits that the student was entitled to receive. Explain the major principles of IDEA. Describe the role of the school district in supporting the major principles of IDEA. Answer: Introduction The government of several countries provide additional emphasis on the disable students of the nation and in order to provide them essential education, which help the disable students to become a good responsible citizen of the country. In US the government of the country always shows more concern on their disable child and provide then additional learning advantages by implementing a significant law of Individual with Disabilities education Act. With the help of this law the disable student seek requisite compensation or education benefits from the district under which the disable student is schooling (Apling Jones, 2007). The law has six main principle under which the district use to bear the expenses for the requisite facilities for the students who are disable and require additional emphasis. The easy is on the law in which the students with disability can get additional benefit from the district. Main body In order to discuss the Individual with Disabilities education Act a case is undertaken for the study, the case is of a disable student Frank Evan versus Board of Education of the Rhinebeck Central School District Defendant. In this case it is observed that Frank a fifteen year old student is suffering from dyslexia a serious learning disabilities as he is unable to read, write and spelling (Bickenbach, 2012). His mother Catherin Evans file case that her son is a disable and he should grant the (individualised Educational Program) IEP and ( Free Appropriate Public Education) FAPE under the Law of Individual with Disabilities education Act. However, the Court rejected Evans application in order to a trio basis on the evidence that Frank has higher than the average intelligence of his age he has some problems, which would be reduced with the age thus, he should not get the benefit of FAPE and IEP. The government introduce IDEA to help the disable child of the nation for carrying out their education so that they can become a good and responsible citizen of the country. As per the law the students get benefit from the district, where they schooling. Major principles of IDEA The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) are a current federal education law. IDEA assures some specific safeguards and rights to children with their disabilities and also their guardians. IDEA mostly contains six principles which provide the structure around that special education services are provided and designed to candidates with their disabilities (Javier, 2005). In this context, the six principles reflect the intent and spirit of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The principles are given below: Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) Appropriate Evaluation Individualized Education Program (IEP) Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) Parent and Students Participation in Decision Making Procedural Safeguards Nonetheless, the six principles mainly work to guarantee which children with their disabilities and also need to go to the Institution or school daily and must have the individual educational requires addressed and determination. Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) This four word is critical and significance in this context. The other important material of FAPE is a requirement in which a country should take the decisions to search the children who may have the disabilities and also ready to evaluate (Jones, Apling, Smole, 2004). This is also known as "child find" service. This mostly applies to those children who are not probably eligible to admit the public school. Appropriate Evaluation When a child is mostly referred for complete educational evaluation and IDEA guarantees which safeguards are at the service. Individualized Education Program (IEP) IEP is the main attraction of the childrens right to a proper free public education. Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) IDEA creates a very precise and clear that the disable children are also not required the non-disabled peers to the largest potential area in educational settings and as well as such other nonacademic or extracurricular activities (Priaulx Wrigley, 2013). Parent and Students Participation in Decision Making Participate in every meeting to concern their childs special education and also obtain the notification of these meetings in a proper manner. Make a decision that means they can easily understand the options, and decisions that why the proposals are rejected or accepted. Procedural Safeguards IDEA requires school state and districts to progress the process which provides guardians with a new path to influence their own children's right to FAPE or Free Appropriate Public Education. The school district play vital role in order to support the major principle of IDEA. Conclusion From this scenario, the case act to concern a guardians right to at public expenses need to fulfill this regulatory structure. Moreover, not only the partners and review or hearing officers under the Individuals with Disabilities Education (IDEA) need to profits from the systematic combination. In short, the act status may summarize as the two procedural and preliminary steps of the regulatory structure and the intermediate step of the proper district's evaluation (Jones, Apling, Smole, 2004). These Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is the federal law. References Apling, R. Jones, N. (2007).The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Nobility in Shakespeares Works Essay Example Essay Example
Nobility in Shakespeares Works Essay Example Paper Nobility in Shakespeares Works Essay Introduction In a time of clear-cut class distinctions and social stratifications, William Shakespeare snatched up an opportunity to juxtapose the cultural norms of Elizabethan society with fictional plays on the stage of the Globe Theater. His use and demonstration of the word ââ¬Å"noble,â⬠throughout the play Julius Caesar, reflects the context of the word in 17th century England as well as its use and connotations in ancient Roman society. The word ââ¬Å"nobleâ⬠itself was loaded in both Elizabethan and Roman societies with multiple ideals clinging to its five letters. Questions of virtue, status, aristocracy and fame that both the characters in Julius Caesar, as well as Shakespeareââ¬â¢s audience at the Globe asked, connect the total meaning of this word to human nature across the boundaries of time and context. Shakespeare used the theme of nobility in Julius Caesar to interpret the relationship of commoners in the Elizabethan era and the social order, the role of the monarch y and the emphasis on virtue of his time. According to the online Oxford English Dictionary, noble is both an adjective and a noun. Therefore, you can be it or you can have it. Nobility in Shakespeares Works Essay Body Paragraphs The characters of Julius Caesar that are considered nobility in societyââ¬âsuch as Brutus, Julius Caesar and Cassius, are the ones seeking to have nobility. This can be seen from the very beginning of the play, during one of Cassiusââ¬â¢ first soliloquys: ââ¬Å"Rome, thou hast lost the breed of noble bloods! â⬠(1. 2. 242). Depending on interpretation, it can be argued that this quote indicates that the higher social stratus of Rome is losing power as plebeians gain more influence on government and economy. Or it can be interpreted that Rome is losing its virtue, its moral superiority. To understand the difference, it is imperative to take a closer look at the definitions of both kinds of ââ¬Å"noble. â⬠As a noun, a noble is ââ¬Å"a person of noble rank or birthâ⬠(oxforddictionaries. com). As an adjective, to be noble is defined as, ââ¬Å"belonging to a hereditary class with high social or political status,â⬠and almost more importantly in context of the play, as ââ¬Å"having or showing fine personal qualities or high moral principles and idealsâ⬠(oxforddictionaries. com). In either case, both Rome in Julius Caesar, as well as Elizabethan England, faced tension when it came to nobles n society, the human act of nobility and their nobility (the rank) acting with nobility (the virtue). Shakespeare was able to make an example out of Rome that transcended to his Globe audience because of the institutions of society and government in Rome. The Republic of Rome that harbored a representative, elected government was of clear interest to the commoners of 17th century England, who were under the rule of the monarchy. The ability to portray a democracy to the masses of England was a way to keep them content under the rule of their own nobility. According to Skip Knoxââ¬â¢s Europe In The Age Of The Reformation, social mobility at this time was impossible. The source of status in England was blood, plain and simple (Knox, ââ¬Å"S ocial Historyâ⬠). This is reflected in Julius Caesar, and the spilling of blood does not change the social mobility of any characters. Brutus is the perfect example here. After Caesarââ¬â¢s assassination, although he is convinced that he acted out of sheer virtue, is Brutus exalted in the social structure? No. In fact, he is hated by the masses of Rome. This example would have hit a nerve with Englandââ¬â¢s commoners that deeply resented, but still believed, that blood was the acquisition of oneââ¬â¢s social standing. A common saying among the populace of England was, ââ¬Å"blood will tell,â⬠which affirmed the resentment and acceptance that the estate did indeed exist, with many popular stories where a noble in disguise will nevertheless be recognizedââ¬âeven among commoners (Knox, ââ¬Å"Social Historyâ⬠). This plays out directly for the audience in Julius Caesar, when we are first introduced to nobleman Marc Antony. While he speaks in iambic pentamete r, which indicates noble status, his actions and environment speak otherwise. Antony arrives in the play naked, among commoners and celebrating with them during a fertility festival. His nakedness and place among the plebeians suggests equality with them, while his speech and title indicate his place as a nobleman. Later in the play, his actions distinguish him as a noble man of virtue, elevating him not in society, but morallyââ¬âwhile Cassius and Brutus, who were nobler in status than Antony, fall at the price of their own blood. There is the motif of blood showing up again. The layers that Shakespeare uses to bridge the societies, values and contexts of both ancient Rome and 17th century England are twisted and tangled as to where they seem to merge. This merging is evident in the attitude of the noble class of both societies towards the commoners of the place and time. In Elizabethan England, commoners could not take part in governmentââ¬âthe monarchy was a power that th ey had no control over, but had complete control over them. In Julius Caesar, we can see the nobilityââ¬â¢s distrust of the plebeians and their influence on the state, from the words of the nobleman Flavius: ââ¬Å".Iââ¬â¢ll about / And drive away the vulgar from the streets. So do you too, where you perceive them thick. / These growing feathers plucked from Caesarââ¬â¢s wing / Will make him fly an ordinary pitch.â⬠(1. 1. 69-73). Interestingly enough, as Knox points out, our word ââ¬Å"vulgarâ⬠comes from the Latin vulgus, which translates to ââ¬Å"common peopleâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Social Historyâ⬠). This linguistic history proves the distaste of the noble class for the common people and gives stock to the commonersââ¬â¢ mutual resentment of the estate. Throughout the play we also see the characterization of the common masses as being fickle. This interpretation would have served the 17th Century monarchy well in keeping the power of government out of the ha nds of the English people. By convincing audiences that masses are fickle and do not have any place in influencing government and making decisions in matters of which they have no knowledge, keeping power in the small circle of the monarchy was much simpler. Julius Caesar affirmed to English audiences that democracy leads to disorder because the unintelligent commoners take part. Scene 3, Act 3 illustrates this theme in an ideal pro-monarchy English manner by representing the fickleness and perceived idiocy of the common man: CINNA THE POET. Truly, my name is Cinna. FIRST PLEBEIAN. Tear him to pieces. Heââ¬â¢s a conspirator. CINNA THE POET. I am Cinna the poet. I am Cinna the poet. FOURTH PLEBEIAN. Tear him for his bad verses! Tear him for his bad verses! CINNA THE POET. I am not Cinna the conspirator. FOURTH CITIZEN. It is no matter. His nameââ¬â¢s Cinna. Pluck but his name out of heart and turn him going. (3. 3. 26-31. ) This distrust, along with the characterization of the common man made for a social environment where nobility in England were able to argue the sensibility and safety of the monarchy, while keeping the commoners at bay. The representation of democracy, a seemingly fictional and fantastical idea to English masses, made for a government that was less than favorable if it led to assassination, war, bloodshed and tragedy. By ââ¬Å"protectingâ⬠them from this kind of government, English nobility was acting out of ââ¬Å"noble virtueâ⬠for the welfare of the peopleââ¬âbut just as we ask of Brutusââ¬â¢ actions, were these actions noble and selfless, or dishonorable and selfish? Throughout the play, we see that Brutus sees himself as the most noble Roman of all, not directly because of his actions, but the motives that drive his actions. He explains of his desire to seek nobility in the most pure sense of virtue during a conversation with Cassius: ââ¬Å"And it shall please me well. For mine own part / I shall be glad to lear n of noble menâ⬠(4. . 55-56. ). He truly does believe that his actions and words match in motive and deed, but beyond the character we see hints that Shakespeare wants to characterize Brutus differently than Brutus would like himself to be characterized. While Antony speaks in iambic pentameter as was mentioned earlier, Brutus speaks in prose. Prose is the language of the people, and if the people are ignorant, fickle and lacking nobility in every sense of the word, then the fact that Brutusââ¬â¢s language puts him on their level suggests that he embodies the same ignorance, fickleness and dishonor. He just happens to represent these negative characteristics in a higher level of society, which indicates that these characteristics exist in the upper estate. Through Brutus and Antony, Shakespeare proves to the common masses of England that virtue can be found in the masses and the high society, and that dishonorable men are not only confined to the masses but can also be at w ork in the state. The question of nobility and its place in society and in the heart of man was a question that existed in the turbulent times of the ancient Roman Empire and transcended all the way to the revolution-ready Elizabethan Age. Shakespeare was able to apply context to the meaning of status and virtue throughout Julius Caesar with the use of the word ââ¬Å"noble,â⬠and its two main definitionsââ¬âas the noun and as the adjective. He proved to his audiences that while the blood pulsing through your veins was the indicator of your social status and advantage as a noble or lack of nobility entirely, the nature of a manââ¬â¢s heart was the indicator of nobility and honor. Through this, one man and one stage could bridge fiction and reality, Rome and England, plebeian and commoner, senator and duke, democracy and empire. Breakfast Club
The five main characters are named Andrew Clark; Brian Johnson; Claire Standish; John Bender; and Allison Reynolds. These characters wrestle with self-acceptance; longs for parental approval; and fight against peer pressure. The objective of these students are to write an essay of no less than one thousand words about who they think they are. This is given to them by their principal/ warden for the day, Richard ââ¬Å"Dickâ⬠Vernon, played by Paul Xavier Gleason. He tries to keep them in their separate cliques by telling them to remain quiet and stating that any monkey business is ill-advised. He starts out by saying ââ¬Å"It is now 7:06. You have exactly 8 hours and 54 minutes to think about WHY you are here to ponder the error of your ways. You will not talk you will now move from these seats. â⬠Andrew Clark, played by Emilio Estevez, is an athlete, a jock, and a ââ¬Å"sporto. â⬠He is currently on the high school wrestling team. His dad is always pushing him to do better since he doesnââ¬â¢t want his son to be a loser because thatââ¬â¢s not ââ¬Å"acceptableâ⬠in his family. Andrew learns to accept the pressure and his wrestling life, although he doesnââ¬â¢t want to be in it. He also learns to accept the fact that taping Larry Lesterââ¬â¢s butt cheeks was very wrong and the fact that his dad was okay with it and wanted him to do worse to Larry was also wrong. Brian Johnson, played by Anthony Michael Hall, is a ââ¬Å"brainiacâ⬠, a geek, and a ââ¬Å"neo-maxie zoom deebie (a dork). â⬠Brian is always looking for acceptance from the popular crowd and could never get it. He learns the most important thing is to accept himself. His reason for being in detention was he brought a gun to school to attempt suicide. Claire Standish, played by Molly Ringwald, is a princess, a prom queen, and ââ¬Å"miss popularity. She struggles throughout the movie to accept that she is unhappy. She also realizes she is trying to be something sheââ¬â¢s not so she would be considered ââ¬Å"popular. â⬠Claire discovers that she is not alone. She learns that everyone needs to mask their feelings to become what people expect them to be and eventually learns to ac cept herself. At home, her mother tries to keep Claire from having fun. John Bender, played by Judd Nelson, is a criminal, a rebel, a punk, and a rebellious bad boy. He starts out as a tough guy who no one really knows well. He shows no respect towards anyone especially teachers and school property. Eventually, he shows acceptance for himself and his classmates and changes his attitude when they share things about themselves. Throughout the movie, he makes fun of Claire but by the end of the movie he shows compassion for her. To show he changed, he stops being rude to Claire and begins to accept everyone else. John becomes more comfortable in his own skin as well as with the other people around him. Allison Reynolds, played by Ally Sheedy, is a basket case, a loner, and a weirdo. She has always felt like an outcast, she is also the most socially isolated and says she has no friends. Throughout the movie, she discovers the unhappiness in her home life is not her fault. At home, Allison is a victim of child neglect from her workaholic parents, and as a result carries a large bag with her to school every day in case she feels like running away. She is the least hesitant to talk openly about her home life and is not afraid of being different. She is also a compulsive liar. She also learns to accept herself and her classmates. Allison claims she is in detention due to the fact she had nothing better to do. I feel I can best identify myself with the character Claire Standish. One thing we have in common is the fact that we believe in relationships where there is one guy and one girl. In the movie, you find out that Claire doesnââ¬â¢t fool around with just any guy and sex isnââ¬â¢t just about physical pleasure for her. Another thing we have in common is the roles our parents play in our lives. Our parents tend to discipline us for the wrong things we do. The third thing we have in common is we both have a sense of security. Because these characters are from different random groups, none of them are from the same background and are all odd. Although they seem different, they find out they are very similar. They learn to overcome their difference and sort of become friends. They leave detention having a sense of who they are and how they want to remain. In the end, Brian wrote the essay stating they know what they did was wrong and they think Mr. Vernon is crazy for making them write an essay telling him who they think they are because he sees them as he wants to see them.

Terrorism Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Terrorism - Research Paper Example for protection rackets or to enforce a code of silence is usually not labeled terrorism though these same actions may be labeled terrorism when done by a politically motivated group (Beatriz, 2011). Terrorism has been practiced by a broad array of political organizations for furthering their objectives. It has been practiced by right-wing and left-wing political parties, nationalistic groups, religious groups, revolutionaries, and ruling governments. An abiding characteristic is the indiscriminate use of violence against noncombatants for the purpose of gaining publicity for a group, cause, or individual. The symbolism of terrorism can leverage human fear to help achieve these goals (San, 2011). The only general characteristic of terrorism generally agreed upon is that it involves violence and the threat of violence. The terms "terrorism" and "terrorist" (someone who engages in terrorism) carry strong negative connotations. These terms are often used as political labels, to condemn violence or the threat of violence by certain actors as immoral, indiscriminate, and unjustified or to condemn an entire segment of a population. Those labeled "terrorists" by their opponents rarely identify themselves as such, and typically use other terms or terms specific to their situation, such as separatist, freedom fighter, liberator, revolutionary, vigilante, militant, paramilitary, guerrilla, rebel, patriot, or any similar-meaning word in other languages and cultures. Jihad, mujahidin, and fedayeen are similar Arabic words which have entered the English lexicon. It is common for both parties in a conflict to describe each other as terrorists. Terrorist attacks are usually carried out in such a way as to maximize the severity and length of the psychological impact. Each act of terrorism is a ââ¬Å"performanceâ⬠devised to have an impact on many large audiences. Terrorists also attack national symbols, to show power and to attempt to shake the foundation of the country or society
